WARNING: Contact with the spectral realm can be extremely dangerous. Do not attempt any séance, astral projection, or other form of channeling without expert supervision.
While we’re always happy to explore a potential haunting, there are several steps you can take to assure your problem is in fact of a supernatural nature. Again, please use extreme caution, and if in doubt, immediately contact Spectral Sightings or your local paranormal investigator for a complete analysis of your home.
1. Unexplained shadows
Shapes and shadows in vague human forms or in less distinguishable shapes.
Test: To make an accurate assessment of the proposed haunting we suggest you perform a method we like to call “smoking out the ghost.” First, prop a video camera on a tripod in the corner of the room, then use a fog machine to fill the room with smoke. Turn off all the lights and turn your camera to static night vision. Record throughout the night, and in the morning review the footage to see if shadows broke through the smoke.
2. Unexplained noises
Sounds of footsteps, knocks, and banging that can sometimes be subtle and other times very loud.
Test: Depending on the age of your house the noises may be the result of floorboards settling or faulty pipes. To assure this is not the case, fill a glass 2/3 full with water and carefully pour in oil to create a film on top of the water. Place the glass on the floor where the sounds have been coming from and leave it overnight. If noises are heard throughout the night, check the glass to see if the oil has seeped into the water, pooling in the bottom of the glass. If it has, you may have a spirit, as their energy tends to separate the oil from the water and pull it downwards.
3. Feelings of being watched
A paranormal source of energy that consistently occurs in a particular part of the house at a particular time.
Test: This phenomenon is experienced by many but is most often incorrectly diagnosed. One possible test is to sit or stand at the place you feel this sensation most frequently. Place a compass in front of you and note where the arrow is pointing. If a ghost is present, its energy will disrupt the magnetic field, causing the arrow to erratically spin towards its general direction.
4. Cold or hot spots
A classic haunting symptom of noticeable variances in temperature without a discernible cause.
Test: This is a common occurrence with haunting, but many times it’s simply a draft caused by open windows or opened seals. First, assure that all doors, windows, ducts, vents, etc. are in fact sealed. If temperature fluctuation persists, hold a feather in the area of the hot or cold spot. If the feather moves, it is likely a maintenance issue requiring a handyman, not paranormal investigators.
5. Cries and whispers
Muffled voices, whispering, and crying from a particular region of the house with no apparent origin.
Test: Set up a recording device in the area where the sounds are heard most frequently. Play back the recording and listen specifically for cries, whispers, or speaking in unfamiliar languages.
6. Physical assault
Extremely rare but highly disturbing, this phenomenon usually consists of scratches, slaps and hard shoves without apparent cause.
Test: You will know if this happens, trust us. If this occurs, please call immediately, or email us photos for proof.
7. Electrical disturbance
Unexplained occurrences of house lights turning on and off.
Test: This haunting can usually be detected as faulty electrical wiring of the house. If you are seriously alarmed by the frequent occurrences of lights turning off and on, we suggest you have an electrician take a look at the house before getting in contact with paranormal investigators.
8. Visual Apparitions
Formation of human shaped mists or lights.
Test: We suggest doing a deep cleaning of the area in which these mists have been forming so that you can rule out dust and debris as the culprit. Set up a video camera, preferably with static night vision (and a chromospectrometer, if available) and record overnight. Review the footage the next day at extremely high speed. If a shadow or mist remains stagnant for a long period of time, it may be a spirit.
9. Physical evidence
Unexplained writing, handprints, and footprints.
Test: First, assure that the visual remnants are not, in fact, the result of muddy boots, finger painting, or crayons. If this is not the case, leave a sheet of paper over the area where the phenomenon occurred, obtain evidence, and send along to our lab for further investigation.
10. Your child acting uncharacteristically
Erratic behavior, recalcitrance, unexplained mood swings
Test: You’re the parent; you should know your child the best. Rule out any psychological factors with a professional. If behavior remains unexplained, we suggest you set up a voice recorder in the child’s bedroom and record overnight (or when spiritual activity is at its highest). If disturbances are detected, consider relocating the child’s sleeping area and get in touch with a paranormal investigator.
